Tell me,Show me Questions..simply

Tell me... (asked before leaving the driving test centre) the answers are given verbally, no demonstration is required.

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

You would turn the car on, move it very slightly and press the brake pedal. it should feel firm, not spongy or slack and the car should not pull to one side.

 

Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car, and how the tyre pressures should be checked

The information is in the car manual and you can go to the petrol station and use the tyre pressure machine (pressure gauge). 

 

Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash

The rigid part of the head restraint should be positioned in line with the top of your ears, eye level, and as close to the back of your head as possible.

 

How do you check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

The tread should be no less than 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre and around the complete circumference. There should be no cuts or bulges on both the outside and inside of the tyre wall.

 

Tell me how you would check the headlights and tail lights are working. You do not need to exit the vehicle

You would turn the ignition on, turn on the headlights then walk around the car and check all the bulbs.

 

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system

The ABS (amber) warning light would come on the dash

 

Tell me how you would check the direction indicators are working. You don't need to exit the vehicle.

You can either turn on the hazard warning lights or turn the ignition on then activate the indicators then walk around the car and check the all bulbs are working.

 

Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.

You would reverse up to the side of another vehicle or use a shop/house window, press the footbrake and check the reflection of the lights, or you could ask someone else to check the lights as you press the footbrake.

 

Tell me how you would check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

You would start the engine, gently move the steering wheel and make sure it moves freely, if it is heavy there is a problem.

 

Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them. You don't need to exit the vehicle.

You can point to the rear fog light control and you would use them when visibility is less than 100m.

 

Tell me how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on.

Explain you would push the indicator arm forward and a blue headlight icon will come on the dash.

 

Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

Open the bonnet, point to the oil dipstick and explain that you would take the dipstick out, wipe the excess oil off it, dip it back in again, take it back out and the oil should be seen between the maximum and minmum level.

 

Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check the engine has sufficient engine coolant.

Open the bonnet, point to the coolant reservoir and comment the liquid should be seen between the maximum and minimum level markers,

 

Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Open the bonnet, point to the brake fluid reservoir and comment that the liquid should be seen between the maximum and minimum levels.

Show Me (asked during the driving test drive) the correct control needs to be operated keeping complete control of the car.

Wash the rear windscreen

Check the horn is working

Turn on the dipped headlights

Open a side window

Turn on the front demister

Turn on the rear demister
