Coming into the driving instruction industry is something that should not be taken lightly. You may think you can drive well and teaching somebody to do the
same is easy, however the final pass rate at the moment, October 2025, is falling below 35%.
There are several factors for this figure to be so low
- There is no official training body for driving instructors, unqualified individuals can present themselves as trainers to trainee instructors. The lack of an
official training authority allows anyone to claim they can train new instructors resulting in poorly prepared candidates being presented to the Part 3 test.
- The large national driving schools, faced with overwhelming demand for learner driving lessons, are enlisting instructors who receive very little training,
exploiting their own interpretation of the DVSA's rules for trainee instructors. This then leads to the trainees falling short at the Part 3 test.
- There are people embarking on the journey to become a driving instructor who are trying to go through the process as cheaply as possible, taking little to no
training, and expecting to reach the DVSA's standard by applying the absolute minimum effort, then falling short at the Part 3 test.
- Attitude towards the qualification process is 'I just need to pass the tests', leading to test focussed learning which undermines the skills required for real
success.
